Heat Pump Installation and Repair — Both Handled Here

Heat Pump Installation

Replacing an aging system or adding a heat pump for the first time? We handle load calculations, equipment selection, and full installation for ducted and ductless systems across south-central Indiana. Bryant cold-climate models are available, sized to your home's specific heating and cooling demands. Indiana Energy Saver rebates of up to $8,000 are currently available for qualifying households — we'll walk you through what applies to your situation before any work begins.

Heat Pump Repair

Heat pumps work year-round, so when something is off — reduced output, unusual noise, ice buildup, or higher-than-normal energy use — getting it resolved quickly matters. We diagnose and repair all major heat pump makes and models across Bloomington, Spencer, Linton, and Ellettsville, often completing common repairs on the first visit.

Indiana Heat Pump Rebates: What's Available Right Now

Indiana is one of a small number of states with an active rebate program through the federal Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) initiative. For qualifying households, the current program offers:

  • Up to $8,000 toward a heat pump HVAC system for households below 150% of the Area Median Income
  • Up to $14,000 total per household across all qualifying upgrades
  • Rebates applied as a point-of-sale discount — no reimbursement wait
  • Bloomington residents may also qualify for the Bloomington Green Home Improvement Program (BGHIP), which can stack with the Indiana Energy Saver rebate as long as the combined total does not exceed the project cost

These programs are income-qualified and first-come, first-served. Federal heat pump tax credits under Section 25C expired December 31, 2025 and are no longer available for 2026 installs. The Indiana Energy Saver program remains active.

We'll help you determine which programs apply to your household before the estimate, so there are no surprises at the invoice.

Heat Pump FAQs

  • Can heat pumps handle Indiana winters?

Today's cold-climate heat pumps are engineered to operate efficiently well below 0°F. Bryant models we install are built specifically for Midwest conditions and maintain effective heating output even during January cold snaps across Monroe, Owen, and Greene counties. Proper sizing for your home is the key factor — and that's where a local contractor with decades of Indiana install experience makes a real difference.

  • What's the difference between a heat pump and a furnace/AC combo?

A heat pump provides both heating and cooling in a single system, typically using less energy than separate gas and electric equipment. For homes switching from gas, a hybrid configuration pairing a heat pump with a backup furnace is also an option.

  • How long does a heat pump last?

Most systems last 12 to 15 years with regular maintenance. Annual tune-ups are the single most effective way to extend that lifespan and catch small issues before they become costly repairs.

  • Who installs heat pumps in Bloomington, Indiana?

Bates Mechanical has installed and serviced heat pumps in Bloomington and surrounding communities since 1968. We're a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer with two local offices and technicians running regular routes through Spencer, Linton, and Ellettsville.

  • Does a ductless mini-split work for my situation?

Ductless systems are a strong option for additions, detached garages, older homes without existing ductwork, and rooms that consistently run too hot or cold. We'll assess your space and tell you whether a ductless or ducted system is the better fit before recommending anything.
